What Is a Gantt Chart?

Gantt charts is an easy way to visualize project management timelines by transforming task names, start dates, durations, and end dates into cascading horizontal bar charts.In this tutorial we will discuss how to create Gantt chart in Excel

Gantt Chart in Excel Step 1:

On the Insert tab, click Bar and select Stacked Bar. It will result in an empty chart

Gantt Chart in Excel Step 2:

Right click on the empty chart and click Select Data.

Gantt Chart in Excel Step 3:

Click Add and in “series name” Type Start Date and in “Series values” chose B2:B12 as shown below

Gantt Chart in Excel Step 4:

similarly create one more series for duration. Click Add and in “series name” Type Duration and in “Series values” chose C2:C12 as shown below and click ok

Gantt Chart in Excel Step 5:

now click on the Edit and chose the axis label range from A2:A12 as shown below and click ok. So that the vertical axis gets the label

Gantt Chart in Excel Step 6:

Right Click on the vertical axis ->Format Axis->Axis option. Click the check box “Categories in reverse order” as shown below .This will reverse the chart.

Now the chart will be like

Right click on the blue bars ->format data series, under FILL click “No fill” Under BORDER click “No line” as shown below

So now the chart will be like

In the above chart from October to march we haven’t planned any task so we have to remove that duration from the horizontal axis to make the chart appealing

Gantt Chart in Excel Step 8:

Now, Right Click on the horizontal axis ->format Axis -> Axis Options Increase the Minimum value as shown below

Excel Gantt Chart  Step 9:

Right click on any of the maroon bar -> format data series , under series option reduce the gap width to 50% as shown below

So the final chart will be like
